The Sydney vegan food Scene is thriving — but like most cities, you have to know where to look. As a vegan family of four who spent a week based in the Central Business District (CBD) near Darling Harbour, we ate our way through the city and came home with a solid list of recommendations, a few lessons learned, and one restaurant we’re still thinking about. This Sydney vegan food guide tells our top tips and spots for an awesome eating adventure!
A Note on the CBD vs. The Neighborhoods
One thing we noticed pretty quickly: the CBD itself has fewer dedicated vegan spots than the surrounding neighborhoods. Don’t let that discourage you — Surry Hills, Bondi Beach, and Darling Harbour are all easy to get to, and that’s where a lot of the best food is. Plan to explore beyond the city center and you’ll be rewarded.

Sydney Vegan Food Guide
Peace Harmony — CBD
Our first night in Sydney we didn’t want to go far after a long travel day. Peace Harmony was walking distance from our hotel at YEHS Darling Harbour and ended up being a great introduction to the city’s vegan scene. It’s a fully vegan Thai and Asian restaurant, casual and affordable. The pad thai was solid, Easton went straight for the yellow curry, and the soy chicken satay was a hit all around. Good food, easy night. Exactly what we needed.

Woolworths Town Hall — CBD
We kept breakfast and lunch simple for most of the trip — tofu scrambles, cereal, avocado toast at the hotel, PBJ sandwiches for days out. We stocked up at Woolworths Town Hall (Woolies) for groceries. Fair warning: it’s a madhouse. The vegan selection is decent but not exceptional — we found tofu, produce, hummus, plant-based milk, yogurt and granola without any trouble. And Biscoff, obviously. Accidentally vegan and non-negotiable.
One thing worth mentioning: Sydney has independent coffee shops on practically every block, and every single one we visited had plant-based milk without us even having to ask. Coffee culture here is strong and vegan-friendly across the board.
Gelato & Ice Cream
One thing we didn’t expect — excellent gelato and ice cream options all over the city. We stumbled into Gelatissimo near Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, which turned out to be a chain with locations around Sydney. Good news for vegan families: they have dairy-free options that held up well against the kids’ scrutiny. We found similar spots in most neighborhoods we wandered through — vegan-friendly gelato and ice cream seemed pretty easy to come by across the city. Not something you need to plan around, just something to look forward to.

Funky Pies — Bondi Beach
Meat pies are a big deal in Australia. We were determined to find a vegan version and Funky Pies in Bondi Beach delivered. It’s a small casual spot with outdoor seating in one of Sydney’s most iconic neighborhoods — worth the trip just for the area. The funky chicken pie was excellent, and the smoothies were a hit with the kids. If you’re going to Bondi Beach anyway, this is a must-stop.

Eat Ozzo — Darling Harbour
After a morning at the Australian National Maritime Museum we stopped into Eat Ozzo nearby. It’s not fully vegan but has solid plant-based options — pita-style wraps with tofu being the main one. Quick and convenient if you’re already in the Darling Harbour area. Honest assessment: not the most kid-friendly menu, and not a destination spot, but it did the job.
Shift Eatery — Surry Hills ⭐
This was the best meal of the trip — and we went back twice to make sure.
Shift Eatery is a fully vegan restaurant in Sydney, in the Surry Hills neighborhood, a relaxed and walkable neighborhood that’s worth exploring on its own. We went for lunch one day and came back for breakfast another morning. The vegan Reuben is one of the best I’ve had anywhere, full stop.
But the real conversation at our table was about the pancakes. Xavier’s Pancakes — named after the owner’s kids, which we found out when we got talking with him — officially dethroned Jeff’s famous Sunday pancakes at home. The kids have not let him forget it. The whole place has a genuine, personal feel that’s hard to manufacture. We loved it.
If you only have time for one restaurant in Sydney, make it Shift Eatery. Oh, and try the cupcakes too!!! A kiddo slam dunk.

Soul Burger — Delivery via DoorDash
Last night in Sydney, everyone was tired, and we wanted comfort food delivered to the door. Soul Burger came through. Fully vegan burgers, fries, and apps — the popcorn chicken box was the kids’ favorite. Great send-off meal. Would order again without hesitation.
What We Didn’t Get To
Sydney’s vegan scene is big enough that we barely scratched the surface. Still on our list for next time:
- Yulli’s
- Plant Patty
- Oh My Days Vegan Patisserie — vegan pastries deserve their own visit

Final Thoughts
There is lots of good selections for Sydney vegan family restaurants. well for vegan families. The key is getting out of the CBD into the neighborhoods — Surry Hills especially is worth building time around. Grocery stores are manageable, coffee shops are universally plant-milk friendly, and the dedicated vegan restaurants we found were genuinely excellent, not just “good for vegan food.”
We left with a list of places we didn’t get to. That’s usually a good sign.
